The FA Cup is the leading football event in English football and it is the world's oldest national football in the history of sports. It first played in season 1871-1872, during the first and Second World Wars the competition was suspended after that it was held every year.

The Tottenham Hotspur was the first FA Cup winner of the 20th century. After the Football League founded in 1888, when they were playing in the Southern League, they were the only non-league club to ever win the FA Cup final.

The FA Cup final competition was held for the first time at the legendary Wembley Stadium in 1923. Chelsea won the 2017/18 FA Cup after beating Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley in May.

The FA Cup starts to all clubs up to level 10 of the English football league system which meets qualifying criteria. The top four levels clubs from the Premier League and Football League automatically qualifying for the competition. The non-league football six-level clubs are also qualified if they participated in the FA Trophy, FA Cup, or FA Vase events last season. The newly created clubs such as F.C. United of Manchester in 2005/06 and 2006/07 were not allowed to play in the FA Cup in the starting seasons. All participating clubs in the competition played on the appropriate stadium.

In recent years the number of participants expanded significantly. The 660 clubs took part in the competition in the 2004-05 season. From 1921-1922 they had made 656 beating records. The number of participants increased to 674 in the year of 2005-2006, in 2006-2007 raised to 687 clubs, in 2007-2008 to 731 and 2008-2009 to 762. Gradually the numbers were changed after that it   remained stable. In 2010-11 the 759 clubs participated, a record 763 in 2011/12, 758 for 2012/13, 737 for 2013/14, and 736 for 2014/15. In the comparison of that only 92 members involved in other major leagues such as Premier League, Football League, English national cup, and the League Cup.

 

FA Cup Competition Format:

In August the competition held as a knockout competition consisting of twelve rounds, a semi-final, and then final which held in May. A Byes system makes sure that clubs above levels 9 and 10 participate in the competition at a later date. There is no seeding, the games in every round are determined by a random draw. Before the 5th round, games that end in a tie are repeated only once. Starting six rounds are qualifying games, with the draws being organized regionally. The following six rounds are the proper rounds in which all clubs participated in a tie.
